چکیده

The coalescence of pairs of massive black holes are the strongest and most promising sources for LISA. In fact, the gravitational wave signal from the final inspiral and merger will be detectable throughout the universe. In this paper we describe the first step in a two-step hierarchical search for the gravitational wave signal from inspiraling massive BH binaries. It is based on a method routinely used in ground-based gravitational wave astronomy, namely filtering the data through a bank of templates. However we use a novel, Monte Carlo based (stochastic), method for laying a grid in the parameter space, and we use the likelihood maximized analytically over some parameters, known as the F-statistic, as a detection statistic. We build a coarse template bank to detect gravitational wave signals and to make preliminary parameter estimation. The best candidates will be followed up using a Metropolis–Hasting stochastic search to refine the parameter estimates. We demonstrate the performance of the method by applying it to the Mock LISA data challenge 1B (training data set). A template bank to search for gravitational waves from inspiralling compact binaries

Matched filtering is used to search for gravitational waves emitted by inspiralling compact binaries in data from ground-based interferometers. One of the key aspects of the detection process is the deployment of a set of templates, also called a template bank, to cover the astrophysically interesting region of the parameter space. In a companion paper, we described the template bank algorithm ...

The stochastic gravitational-wave background from massive black hole binary systems: implications for observations with Pulsar Timing Arrays

Massive black hole binary systems, with masses in the range ∼ 10 − 10 M⊙, are among the primary sources of gravitational waves in the frequency window ∼ 10 Hz−0.1Hz. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) are the observational means by which we will be able to observe gravitational radiation from these systems. We carry out a systematic study of the genera...

A three-stage search for supermassive black-hole binaries in LISA data

Gravitational waves from the inspiral and coalescence of supermassive black-hole (SMBH) binaries with masses m1 ∼ m2 ∼ 10 are likely to be one of the strongest sources for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We describe a three-stage data-analysis pipeline designed to search for and measure the parameters of SMBH binaries in LISA data. The first stage uses a time– frequency track-sea...

On the formation and evolution of black-hole binaries

We present the results of a systematic study of the formation and evolution of binaries containing black holes and normal-star companions with a wide range of masses. We first reexamine the standard formation scenario for close black-hole binaries, where the progenitor system, a binary with at least one massive component, experienced a common-envelope phase and where the spiral-in of the compan...

Detecting Binary Black Holes With Efficient and Reliable Templates

Detecting binary black holes in interferometer data requires an accurate knowledge of the orbital phase evolution of the system. From the point of view of data analysis one also needs fast algorithms to compute the templates that will employed in searching for black hole binaries. Recently, there has been progress on both these fronts: On the one hand, re-summation techniques have made it possi...
